The third generation redesigned model has a new lightweight body that weighs approximately 90 kg less than the previous model to improve fuel economy.

The third generation includes a plug-in hybrid variant, called PHEV.
The plug-in hybrid has a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder MIVEC petrol engine, coupled with an electric powertrain, derived from the electric systems used on the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, it produces a combined 197 hp.
The Outlander PHEV has a 12 kWh lithium-ion battery pack capable of delivering an all-electric range of 52.3 km under the New European Driving Cycle and under the Japanese JC08 test the all-electric range is 60 km.
